When you come home after a long day, sometimes you just want to kick off your shoes and drop whatever you are carrying on the spot. However, this just makes a mess to deal with later. If you set up easy places to put things and develop the habit of using them, you will save time cleaning up later or searching for things and remove visual clutter.
Organizing Essentials for Your Entryway
Keys and Pocket Items: Ensure you have a designated spot for your keys and other small items as soon as you step through the front door. Consider utilizing a practical solution like the SKÅDIS peg board from IKEA, with optional accessories like hooks for keys, clips, and different baskets, or something with several pockets or slots.
- Mail and Flyers: Agree on a designated spot for mail so everyone in the house can find theirs, like a basket on the SKÅDIS. Keep something separate to put unwanted junk mail in for recycling.
- Shoes and more: Keep your entryway clutter-free by investing in a shoe cabinet. This stylish yet functional piece allows for neat shoe storage while offering a convenient surface for placing a small bowl or basket to house keys and incoming mail.
- Gloves, Scarves, and Hats: Streamline the storage of gloves and hats with cloth baskets on shelves or simple organizers that are easy to access but can be put away easily when no longer needed in the spring and summer months.
- Shopping Bags: Create a spot out of sight, perhaps just inside the closet, for reusable shopping bags. Unpack items as soon as you can and be sure to return the bags here so you can easily grab them for the next shopping trip.
- Computer Bags and Purses: Find a regular place to tuck them so they are not a tripping hazard, and you can find them easily when you need them. This could be beside that shoe cabinet or on a shelf.
Home entryways often end up a mess because there’s no consistent or accessible place to put things, and trying to figure it out can feel unnecessarily complicated. Sometimes, expectations just aren’t realistic. For example, you do have a place for mail, but it’s in the kitchen, so mail keeps getting left on top of your shoes. Try moving that designated mail place to the front door to simplify your entrance.
